Welcome to Strong Farm!
Located in New Boston, NH, Strong Farm is home to Nathan, Nicola and Jillian Strong. Nathan has been around farming all his life. Nicola comes from a horsey background but quickly adapted to cows and then a sheep adventure. Jillian was born into farming and has taken to it like a duck to water.
Life on a farm has its ups and downs but it is a healthy way to live and provides a link to the rhythms of life and nature that seem to be missing from so many of our busy lives these days. Our connection to the land and our experiences being present throughout the lives of the animals entrusted to our care is a strong reminder of our responsibility to the earth and to our family, friends and neighbors; a responsibility we take very seriously.
We have been raising grass fed beef since 2001. The cows are Herefords and Hereford/Angus crosses and now crossed with Wagyu beef. We sometimes have a bull onsite and sometimes use an artificial insemination process. Either way we are looking to genetics to produce easy birthing, quick growing calves with mild dispositions. Every cow has a name not a number. Jillian has taken over the naming of all the farm animals which is working out very well (the Princess, Belle, Prince Charming and Popeye, Olive Oyl and Swee'Pea lines are just a couple of examples of our themes!). We work around the cows all year long so they are calm and quiet around people which in turn allows us to help out during difficult births, to catch them with ease and transport them to pastures with minimal fuss.
We currently have three Suffolk Punch/Cleveland Bay cross horses. Both breeds have an English background which suits Nic down to the ground, hailing from Suffolk, England, as she does. Chip, the gelding, is 13 years old. Daisy, his mother, is around 20. Teddy is Daisy's son, he is 6.
Jillian has been expanding her 4H activities with working steer. She just got her third team - Giorgio and Rocco. They are Holstein/Wagyu crosses from Marc Brisson's dairy farm in Shoreham, Vermont. Her last team, Otis and Earl, were sold to be a pulling team and are doing very well this season.
We will also be breeding pigs soon and will have pork available. Tammy is our Berkshire/Tamworth cross. She is a character and one of the friendliest residents on the farm!
